Clinical and Bacteriological Observations of Peritiontis Due to Intestinal Perporation

Abstract
Clinical and bacteriological observations were made for 24 cases of surgical patients who were operated between Sept. 1961 and Aug. 1962 at the Surgical Department of Kyung-gook University Hospital under the .diagnosis of generalized peritonitis due to small bowelperporatiens which were suspected to be caused by the infection of salmonella.
1) The ratio of male to female was 2 to 1. Although patients were observed through the year, most cases were seen during July and August.
2) Perporations were developed mostly at the 2nd. 3rd And 4th weeks from the onset of the diseases and the mortality rate after ileum resection with entero-enterostomy was 20.9%.
3) 14 cases(58.2%) out of 24 revealed positive Widal test.
.4) Salmonella was isolated from 8 patients and 6 of them were identified as Salmonella typhi and 2 as S. paratyphi A.
5) 33.3% of them was isolated from bile; 33.3% from bone marrow, 12.4%:from ulcerated bowel tissue, 4.1 % from peripheral venous blood and 4.1 % from contaminated ascitic fluids.
6) Kanamycin was the most effective antibiotic against the isolated strains and terramycin was the next to kanamycin. The strains were resitant to penicillin, dihydrostreptomycin, aureomycin, erythomycin and chloramphenicol.
